Excerpt from A History of the Republican Party
Early in February, 1900, the writer delivered an address before the Stamina Republican League of Cincinnati on "The Origin and Rise of the Republican Party." The interest in the subject shown by the audience and the many words of approbation led to a deeper consideration of the history of the Party, and the address was repeated on a more elaborate plan before many other organizations in Cineinnati and vicinity.
It soon became apparent that the great majority of every audience had very vague recollections of the tragic events which led to the organization of the Party, and of its early history, owing perhaps to the fact that they belonged to a generation that had followed the enactment of those events.

This history is so detailed and was more than I ever wanted to know. I would classify it as a reference book rather than something you would just pick up and read. Facts and figures noted for every single possible candidate since the inception of the party down to 3 times a vote taken. Also detailed the platform they were running on every year. It does stop at around 1904. So nothing really going into the 20th century.Product details

A History of the Republican Party Classic Reprint Geo; W Platt 9781440079283 Books Reviews
This is a very good detailed book on the origin of the Republicam Party.
This book along with the establishment of the Republican Party gives a good look into the start of the Civil War.
Great reading...The history of both parties and the differences that still hold true today.
Should be recommended reading for all Americans
Obviously written early in the 20th century, this is an interesting history of the period. It is also a good way to get a more contemporary vision how the day to day activities and how they differed from now. Lots of stats that I find interesting but that could be a little boring to most, but they are easily skimmed it you prefer.
Before You Vote Read this and also the History of the Democratic Party. Know the core philosophy of the people and party you are voting for.
Yes, proud. No groaning allowed. Nor revisionist history. To the shock of anyone who relies on major media or public education for their opinions on the Republican party, this turn of the 20th century recount is an eye opener. The Republican Party was formed over a single issue abolition of slavery. In 1860 the party got it right with the nomination and election of Lincoln. In 1861 with The Emancipation Proclamation they got it right again. And again in 1865 over vehement northern Democrat opposition, they got it right with the 13th Amendment in abolishing slavery (The South was a given opposition but could not vote as they had seceded).
The book is a very interesting read, written when the history was fresh on the mind of its author (George Washington Platt). Further, though a century old, it couldn't be a more timely companion piece to Spielberg's very outstanding recount in "Lincoln".
Excellent early history of the GOP including its founding as the anti-slavery party, the election of Lincoln, and the continuing struggle to stop that "other party" from re-enslaving the former slaves in all but name. Gives history of every Presidential election from then until early 1900's including the actual GOP party platforms, which make fascinating reading even today.
This history is so detailed and was more than I ever wanted to know. I would classify it as a reference book rather than something you would just pick up and read. Facts and figures noted for every single possible candidate since the inception of the party down to 3 times a vote taken. Also detailed the platform they were running on every year.
